Dr Carpet cleans wool area rugs across NYC and offers pickup and return delivery for rugs that need controlled off-site care. We inspect construction, dye stability, stains, odor and previous damage before selecting the cleaning approach.
Why wool needs rug-specific care
Wool is resilient but can hold deep particulate soil, absorb moisture and react to overly aggressive alkalinity, heat or agitation. A wall-to-wall carpet process is not automatically appropriate for a hand-knotted wool rug.
Persian, Oriental & handmade wool rugs
We care for many wool Persian, Oriental, Turkish, Oushak, flat-weave and contemporary handmade rugs after evaluating the actual construction and condition of the piece.
Pet urine in wool rugs
Urine can move below the face yarn into the foundation and may alter dyes as it ages. Surface deodorizer alone may not address contamination that has reached deeper layers.
Pickup for NYC apartments
Large or valuable wool rugs are often easier and safer to handle through pickup. We can collect from apartments and homes and return the rug when the service is complete.
Stains and color changes
Wine, coffee, food color, old spotters and previous cleaning chemistry can create permanent color loss or dye movement. We treat based on what the rug can safely tolerate.
Repair after cleaning
Worn fringe, side-cord damage, holes, moth damage and structural wear are separate from cleaning. Repair or restoration can be evaluated after the rug is clean enough to inspect accurately.
How Dr Carpet approaches a fine rug
Our first job is to determine what the rug can safely tolerate. We look at the face fiber, foundation, fringe and side edges; note existing holes, tears, wear or prior repairs; review visible stains and odor; and ask what happened before the rug reached us. A rug that has been repeatedly spot-cleaned, exposed to pet urine, stored damp or treated with unknown chemistry may need a different plan from a similar-looking rug with ordinary soil.
For many fine, hand-knotted, large, heavily soiled or odor-affected rugs, pickup and controlled off-site care is the better option. Dr Carpet manages the customer communication, collection and return. We do not represent an off-site partner facility as a Dr Carpet-owned plant. What matters to the customer is that the rug is assessed, handled deliberately, and the recommended work is explained before approval.
What we will not promise just to make a sale
We will not claim that every stain disappears, every odor is reversible or every damaged rug can be restored to “new.” Permanent dye loss, sun fading, abrasion, chemical burns, weak foundation yarns and old repairs can limit the result. A serious rug-care company should distinguish removable soil and contamination from permanent physical or color change.
Fastest way to get a useful quote
Text a full photo of the rug, a close-up of the problem area, approximate dimensions, your ZIP code and a short description of what happened. If there is pet urine, tell us whether it happened once or repeatedly. If a household cleaner was used, tell us what it was. Those details help us give a more useful first recommendation before pickup.
Some wool rugs may tolerate specific extraction processes, while many hand-knotted or specialty rugs are better suited to off-site cleaning. The correct answer depends on construction, dyes, backing and condition.
Do you pick up wool rugs in Brooklyn and Manhattan?
Yes. Pickup and return delivery are available throughout Brooklyn and Manhattan, subject to route and building access.
Can pet urine smell be removed from wool?
Many urine odors can be significantly improved, but the result depends on how deeply contamination entered the rug, how long it remained, and whether dyes or foundation materials were damaged.
How do I get an estimate?
Send photos, approximate dimensions, your ZIP code and the main concern. We can give an initial estimate and confirm the final recommendation after inspection.
Have a rug you do not want treated like ordinary carpet?
Send photos, dimensions and your ZIP code. We will tell you the next practical step.
